Colleges of the Fenway Director of Environmental Health & Safety - Colleges of Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts

Colleges of the Fenway (COF) is a collaborative effort of six neighboring Boston-based colleges in the Longwood Medical and Academic area. This collaboration was created to add value to student academic and social life while seeking innovative methods of investing in new services and containing the costs of higher education.

COF is looking for a Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S;) to work with three of the member colleges: Emmanuel College, Simmons College and Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Director of EH&S; will be responsible for all required EH&S; programs on each campus and for identifying opportunities where the colleges can collaborate to enhance services and manage costs.

Primary Tasks and Areas of Responsibility:

? Develops and implements all required EH&S; programs in order to ensure compliance with EH&S; regulations including but not limited to US EPA, US OSHA, Boston Fire Department, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).

? Oversees and seeks to continually improve all programs related to environmental health and occupational safety including but not limited to fire safety, laboratory safety, OSHA compliance chemical waste control and disposal, accident and injury investigation and reduction, safety training and industrial hygiene; Oversees all equipment for compliance. Proactively facilitates compliance with EH&S; policies, governmental regulations and industry standards and guidelines.

? Assesses environmental workplace conditions related to chemical exposure and physical agents such as heat, noise, etc. Recommends corrective actions where necessary.

Oversees and/or provides employee training for environmental compliance, worker safety, and laboratory safety programs

? Develop shared training programs for the three colleges as feasible and appropriate.

? Serves as Chemical Hygiene Officer, Supervising the laboratory and classroom, including art and photography studios, safety program; works with chemical hygiene coordinators to development and implement chemical hygiene plan (CHP). Performs annual review and all necessary updates of the CHP.

? Develops and manages the Asbestos Control Program; working with outside support where needed and approved.

? Manages OSHA programs such as respiratory protection, permit required confined space programs, lockout/tagout, hazard communication program. Provides training related to OSHA compliance and/or selects outside training partners.

? Assists Physical Plant/Facilities, as needed in acquiring permits and preparing and submitting regulatory reports including but not limited to MWRA permits and report, hazardous waste, Tier 2 reporting, and air permits.

? Coordinates the industrial hygiene equipment management program to assure that all monitoring equipment is calibrated and certified for use.

? Conducts/coordinates laboratory safety inspections, managing follow-up to assure proper close out of any observations. ? Presents EH&S; information to risk, compliance or appropriate senior leadership on an annual basis or as requested

? Serves as a member of the Safety -Committee and other appropriate committees on each campus.

? Supervises the chemical waste collection, and universal waste collection and disposal program on each campus.

? Responds to hazardous materials emergencies. Provides control and remediation of hazards.

? Develops and maintains a measurement system to track EH&S; performance metrics (number of safety incidents etc.). Compiles, reviews, analyzes and interprets data and communicates with the Safety Committee and other stakeholders using clear, concise reporting mechanisms to achieve EH&S; improvement and compliance.

? Provided technical consultation and recommendations to all departments in matters related to occupational health and safety including but not limited to risk assessments, personal protective equipment selection and usage, and engineering controls.

? Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor(s), or as may be required to meet emergency situations.

? Attends Colleges of the Fenway staff meetings, and meets regularly with the COF supervisor and supervisors from the colleges individually and collectively to coordinate and balance the work.

Background and Experience

5+ years? experience in EH&S; management in a university, biopharmaceutical, healthcare, industrial hygiene or other high technology setting. MS degree in a related field (safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry) is preferred, B.S. is required. Professional certification or certification-eligible, such as CIH, CSP, CHMM, active membership in a professional organization, working knowledge of US OSHA and EPA standards, and OSHA 24-hour HAZWOPER training are preferred.

Strong meeting facilitation, project management, organizational, negotiation and interpersonal skills; ability to foster trust and build interpersonal relationships; excellent attention to detail; excellent diplomatic, analytical, written, and oral communication skills; ability to take initiative, work independently and with groups, and manage several projects simultaneously.

? Reporting Relationship: This position reports directly to the Colleges of the Fenway, Senior Director of Operations and Collaborative Services and indirectly to the immediate designated and approved supervisor for each campus.
